Food allergies are only one type of allergy, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.allergycuhk.org\/foodallergy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eight most common food allergens<\/a> being milk, egg, fish, shellfish, peanut, tree nuts, soy, and wheat\/gluten.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, the symptoms of allergic reactions can include mouth swelling, itchy skin, rashes, diarrhea, vomiting, breathlessness, cough, or even fatalities such as difficulty in breathing and a rapid drop in blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>In more serious cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/anaphylaxis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anaphylaxis<\/a> can occur, which is a life-threatening reaction that causes the body to go into shock.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals may experience allergic reactions in only a couple of minutes, half an hour, a day, a week, or even two weeks. What\u2019s more, the amount of allergen that causes a reaction can also vary. For the most sensitive individuals, the smell of the allergen is enough to trigger symptoms.<\/p>\n<h3>The Situation in Hong Kong and Beyond<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apjai-journal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/5PrevalenceofselfreportedVol30No4December2012P275.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A 2012 study<\/a> reveals that the prevalence of food allergy in children aged 14 and below in Hong Kong was 4.8%, based on a survey of 7,393 children. The study found that the most common allergens are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shellfish (accounts for more than a third of all reactions)<\/li>\n<li>Hen\u2019s egg (14.5%)<\/li>\n<li>Dairy products (10.8%)<\/li>\n<li>Peanuts (8.5%)<\/li>\n<li>Combined fruits (8.5%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The rate of anaphylaxis was also high, as 15.6% of those suffering from adverse reactions had it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Note:<\/em><\/strong><em> When it comes to adults in Hong Kong, there is very <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allergy.org.hk\/final_review.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>little data on the prevalence of allergies<\/em><\/a><em>. As only a minority of children will grow out of their allergic diseases, the problem will likely persist into adulthood.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.allergycuhk.org\/foodallergy#:~:text=Food%20allergies%20affect%20around%201%2D3%25%20of%20adults%20and%204%2D6%25%20of%20children%20worldwide%2C%20with%20recent%20studies%20showing%20that%20its%20prevalence%20is%20increasing.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">around 1-3% of adults and 4-6% of children have some form of food allergies<\/a> around the world. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2023\/09\/08\/real-reasons-food-allergies-are-rise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Experts pointed out a concerning issue<\/a> that indicates that food allergies are becoming more common.<\/p>\n<h2>Tests to Diagnose Food Allergies<\/h2>\n<p>So, how can individuals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/food-allergy\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20355101#phmaincontent_0_ctl01_divByLine:~:text=Diagnosis,-There's\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">find out if they\u2019ve got a food allergy<\/a>? If an individual has a suspected case of food allergy, the doctor will take into account the symptoms, family history of food allergies, and conduct a physical examination in order to exclude other medical problems.<\/p>\n<p>The following tests can also be taken to identify the food allergen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Skin test:<\/strong> A small amount of the suspected food is placed on your skin, which is pricked with a needle to allow a tiny amount of the substance beneath your skin. If you develop a raised bump or a reaction, then you\u2019re most likely allergic to the substance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Blood test:<\/strong> A sample of your blood is taken and sent to the lab for testing. The test checks your blood for allergy-related antibodies known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) to measure your immune system\u2019s responses to particular foods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Elimination diet:<\/strong> You may be asked to eliminate suspected food for a week or two, before adding the food items back into your diet one at a time. This process can help link symptoms back to the food, though it isn\u2019t a foolproof method.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Note:<\/em><\/strong><em> Elimination diet can\u2019t differentiate between food allergy and food sensitivity. If you\u2019ve had a severe reaction in the past, an elimination diet may not be safe.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Oral food challenge:<\/strong> In the doctor\u2019s office, you may be given small amounts of suspected foods to consume. If you don\u2019t develop an allergic reaction during the test, you may be able to include this food in your diet again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Managing Food Allergies<\/h2>\n<p>Currently, there are no cures for a food allergy. To manage the food allergy, individuals are urged to avoid the food as a precautionary measure. If the food is consumed accidentally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/allergies\/antihistamines-for-allergies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antihistamines<\/a> can help treat mild symptoms such as itching and hives.<\/p>\n<p>For severe symptoms or breathing difficulties (like throat swelling or wheezing), an <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a603002.html#:~:text=Epinephrine%20injection%20is%20used%20along,adrenergic%20agonists%20(sympathomimetic%20agents).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">epinephrine injection<\/a> and\/or hospitalization will be required.<\/p>\n<h2>Pre-existing Conditions and Food Allergies<\/h2>\n<p>So, are food allergies considered a pre-existing condition? If the condition has been unstable in the look-back period (a certain period before the effective date of the policy), then it is likely to be a pre-existing condition. This includes having a change in treatment, advice, or prescription.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if the condition has remained stable, then the food allergy isn\u2019t likely to be considered a pre-existing condition.<\/p>\n<h3>Pre-existing Conditions Insurance<\/h3>\n<p>Furthermore, while insurers are typically wary of pre-existing conditions, it\u2019s possible to find plans with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificprime.hk\/health-insurance-plans\/pre-existing\/\">pre-existing coverage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, they\u2019ll attach a waiting period, which means the policyholder will need to wait a specific period of time before being eligible for coverage.
