The words \u2018<i>in vitro\u2019<\/i> are derived from the Latin words <i>in vitr\u014d<\/i>, which literally means \u2018in glass\u2019. IVF therefore describes the joining of a woman\u2019s egg and a man\u2019s sperm outside of the woman\u2019s body, in a laboratory dish. The resulting embryo is then planted back into the woman\u2019s uterus.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/007279.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MedlinePlus<\/a>, there are five basic steps to IVF:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step one: Stimulation<\/strong> &#8211; Fertility drugs are given to the woman to boost egg production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step two: Egg retrieval<\/strong> &#8211; A surgery (usually an outpatient procedure) called \u201cfollicular aspiration\u201d retrieves the eggs from the woman\u2019s body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step three: Insemination and fertilization<\/strong> &#8211; The best quality eggs are joined with the man\u2019s sperm in an environmentally controlled chamber.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step four: Embryo culture<\/strong> &#8211; When the fertilized egg divides, it becomes an embryo. The embryo is checked regularly to ensure it is growing properly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step five: Embryo transfer<\/strong> &#8211; Resulting embryos are inserted into the woman\u2019s womb. If it implants into the lining of the womb and grows, pregnancy is achieved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Where can you go for IVF treatment in Hong Kong?<\/h2>\n<p>In Hong Kong, you can pursue IVF treatment at both public and private facilities. One thing that should be made clear here, however, is that not all hospitals and clinics in the city offer such services. For instance, out of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ha.org.hk\/visitor\/ha_visitor_index.asp?Content_ID=10084&amp;Lang=ENG&amp;Dimension=100&amp;Parent_ID=10042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">42 public hospitals and institutions<\/a> here, only three hospitals offer IVF treatment services:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Prince of Wales Hospital<\/li>\n<li>The Queen Mary Hospital<\/li>\n<li>Kwong Wah Hospital<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As of 2014, there are 41 private clinics and hospitals offering ART treatments. Not every ART-capable clinic and hospital, however, offers IVF treatment; only 11 out of 41 private facilities do. Some of these facilities include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hong Kong Sanitorium Hospital<\/li>\n<li>Hong Kong Assisted Reproduction Center<\/li>\n<li>The Women\u2019s Clinic<\/li>\n<li>Prince of Wales Hospital\u2019s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (private stream)<\/li>\n<li>Queen Mary Hospital (private stream)<\/li>\n<li>Union Reproductive Center<\/li>\n<li>And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrt.org.hk\/english\/licensed\/files\/treatment_eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is also worth noting here that in Hong Kong only heterosexual, married couples are legally allowed to receive fertility treatment. Unmarried residents found to have travelled overseas for IVF or any other ART treatment may face a fine of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scmp.com\/lifestyle\/health\/article\/1677954\/hong-kong-ban-ivf-unwed-discriminatory-say-critics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HKD 25,000<\/a>.
