Hong Kong offers 500,000 free air tickets to travelers and here’s everything you need to know

Yes, you read that right! Hong Kong announced on 7th October 2022 that the city-state is all set to give away 500,000 free flight tickets worth USD $254.8 million to international tourists and residents in early 2023 to boost tourism and encourage people to visit Hong Kong. This news comes soon after the country dropped its longstanding mandatory hotel quarantine requirement. Note that Hong Kong was a major tourism hub in South East Asia pre-pandemic and attracted over 55 million visitors yearly.

A spokesperson from the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) said that further details will be announced once the relevant arrangements have been made with the airlines. Let’s take a closer look at what this news means for travelers in this Pacific Prime Hong Kong article.

Hong Kong is open to tourism but with new rules

After being cut off from the world for over two years, Hong Kong is slowly preparing to return to the tourism game. “We hope to give the maximum room to reconnect Hong Kong and to revitalize our economy,” Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee said in a press conference on Friday.

Note that the quarantine requirements have been lifted, but people coming into Hong Kong still face various rules and restrictions before and after arriving. Here is an overview of the latest rules:

  • Incoming passengers need to submit a pre-flight vaccination certificate and a negative rapid antigen test.
  • After arrival, visitors must undergo a three-day self-monitoring period, during which they are not allowed to go to bars and/or dine in restaurants.
  • Incoming travelers must also undertake PCR tests on days 2, 4, and 6 after arrival, and a rapid antigen test every day for seven days.

The government of Hong Kong hopes to relax the rules mentioned above in the near-future, given that the COVID-19 situation in the country is stable. Nevertheless, if you are planning to visit Hong Kong, here are a few must-visit places:
